Japanese Minimalist Home Design: Interior Design Ideas

We have features Japanese designs on this blog before, but we never cease to be amazed by the way the simplicity of the style can create a calming space. In both of these houses, from the architects at mA-Style, are prime examples of this. Utilizing different levels, angles, and a contrast of open spaces and cozy nooks, they have created two unique homes that reflect Japanese sensibility and minimalist comfort.

The architects worked to create a space that celebrates both light and shadow. The way that the slats in the roof allow and block sunlight and different angles turns the light itself into an artistic show inside the home.

Sturdy ladders lead up to comfortable sleep, reading, or meditating nooks while the spaces below can be used as storage.

The architects suggest that the spaces between the elevated rooms be considered as roads through the “town” that is the home.

A sunny study nook offers a place to work without climbing.

Each room can be used as a bedroom or even its own apartment, with a communal kitchen downstairs.

The ceiling beams offer both practical and aesthetic purpose with their crisscrossed design.

With its steeply pitched roof in contrast with the box shape of the previous home, this space seems different from the outside but utilizes many of the same themes on the inside.

An outdoor garden space and walkway lets residents move freely from the covered interior to the open air.

Inside, once again we see an open, minimalist living space with ladders leading to more private nooks.

The floating stairs may cause trepidation, but are sturdy and beautiful.

The “attic” area offers privacy along with a view of the entire, clean interior of the home.
